Si bien David Hume (1711-1776) suele ser conocido y valorado principalmente por su obra filosófica, el se consideró siempre un escritor y como tal destacó entre sus contemporáneos. Su amplio abanico de intereses y sus vastos conocimientos le llevaron a ocuparse en sus obras de carácter moral -en su sentido etimológico: referido a las 'costumbres' o 'hábitos'- de cuestiones más humildes, pero a menudo presentes en la vida cotidiana (los caracteres, la superstición, la avaricia, el divorcio, la conformidad...), que iluminó con su experiencia y un buen juicio excepcional. En esta selección de sus Ensayos morales, todos ellos de amena lectura, Hume se revela como un pensador muy adelantado a su epoca que defiende, por ejemplo, un matrimonio basado en la igualdad, o bien opiniones en torno al suicidio y la inmortalidad del alma muy discordantes con el sentimiento religioso común en su epoca.
